Traceability and animal welfare: Cinelli’s commitment, passion and expertise
Cinelli goose down is certified and fully traceable – a true jewel of lightness, designed to deliver wellbeing.
We have always been committed to carefully selecting and monitoring our suppliers, sourcing down and feathers exclusively from carefully chosen European farms that do not practise live-plucking or any other procedures that may cause unnecessary suffering to geese. All animals are guaranteed a good quality of life, from outdoor breeding to the complete absence of mistreatment. Thanks to its consistent dedication and documented commitment, Cinelli has received several important certifications that attest to the traceability of the raw material and the protection of animal welfare.
Cinelli is also a member of the EDFA (European Down and Feather Association), an international organisation that unites the world’s leading producers of down products. The EDFA is committed to protecting consumers and, above all, animals.
As proof of its commitment to environmental protection, the company offers fully traceable, controlled products from a responsible supply chain and has been DOWNPASS certified for many years. This certification guarantees and promotes the protection of all animals, ensuring the responsible sourcing of feathers and down, and complete transparency. Among the results of its continuous commitment, Cinelli can also count RDS (Responsible Down Standard) traceability. This was certified following numerous checks prescribed by strict guidelines and emphasises respect for animals, who must be raised in good health and in their natural environment. RDS is an initiative promoted by the non-profit organisation Textile Exchange and Control Union Certifications, which is committed to developing sustainability in the textile industry.
Our goose‑down products are ideal for those who are sensitive to house dust.
The washing and sterilisation processes applied to down and feathers comply with EN12935 hygiene and cleanliness requirements and ensure that the material is sanitised and sterilised before it is used in our products. The use of downproof fabrics with a very tight weave limits dust penetration and effectively prevents the formation of an environment suitable for mite proliferation. These two noteworthy aspects guarantee that the entire Cinelli Bedding Line is strictly hypoallergenic and eligible for NOMITE® certification.
This certification promotes products that can be used in complete safety and peace of mind by people with allergies to household dust. The NOMITE® symbol on Cinelli products further guarantees quality and high production standards for all our customers.
The 12 pillars of the Cinelli down
La qualità della piuma d’oca
A safe and lasting investment
A down purchase is much more than just a one-time expense, because high-quality down will last a lifetime. There are different types of down available on the market, characterised by varying qualities. Cinelli uses only the finest materials to create products that envelop and protect you throughout your life, enhancing their qualities over time.
Origin
Cinelli uses raw materials sourced from Eastern Europe, a geographical area traditionally linked to goose breeding and the subsequent harvesting of down.
Collection
The down used are sourced exclusively from animals raised for food: they are never taken from live animals. Cinelli Piume e Piumini directly monitors and inspects every farm on site, requiring all suppliers to fully comply with animal welfare standards.
Consistency
The down of adult European geese are significantly better than those from Asia, because they are almost twice as large and have softer, silkier plumage with excellent filling power.
Selection
The raw material that arrives at the company consists of feathers and down. These must be separated in order to begin the processing process. Selection takes place using the “selector”, a large wooden cube more than 8 metres high and 11 metres long, which uses an air system that exploits the different specific weights of the elements to separate them.
Dedusting
It is a ‘micro-cleaning’ process that removes any keratinous residues or foreign particles present on the down.
Washing
The duvet is washed seven times. It is washed twice using specially designed washing machines. It is then rinsed five times with cold water to remove all impurities and detergents, thus achieving a high turbidity coefficient.
Turbidity
Water turbidity is a value used to measure the effectiveness of washing operations. By analysing the water coming out of the washing machine during the final rinse, the actual efficiency of the process can be verified according to the UNI EN 1164:2000 parameters. If this is not the case, the washing process is repeated.
Sterilization
The goods arrive at the factory and are immediately sterilised for the first time at a temperature of 133 °C. Then, once the washing and centrifugation cycles are complete, they are sterilised again for at least one hour at a temperature of 120/130 °C. This is a very delicate operation, in which all traces of bacteria are eliminated while maintaining the right amount of residual fat.
Greasy residue
A Cinelli duvet must always have one distinctive feature: it must have a residual fat content of between 0.8 and 1.2 per cent. If the values are lower, the down would be fragile and tend to break, altering its original filling capacity. If the values are higher, on the other hand, it would risk losing its natural expansion power, increasing the possibility of stains on the fabric and the production of unpleasant odours.
Ph
‘pH’ is short for ‘potential hydrogen’ and indicates the acidity of a product and, consequently, signals its ‘non-aggressive’ value on the skin. Down has a pH of 5.6, while cotton (another natural material) used for the lining has a pH of around 5.8. Both are perfect values for ensuring complete comfort for the skin.
Filling Power
This is perhaps the most important and interesting parameter, because it provides proof of the quality of the down: it indicates its ability to expand after compression and its filling power.
Percentage
This value indicates the ratio between the presence of down (first value) and down (second value). The higher the first value, the higher the quality and softness of the filling. However, this value must be evaluated in relation to the filling power. Identical percentages of down can in fact have extremely different filling qualities.
IMBOTTITURA
TESSUTO

Rinsing
Rinsing must be very thorough and repeated several times to remove all traces of soap and prevent halos on the fabric.
Drying
Open air drying is ideal, away from direct sunlight. Tumble drying is permitted at medium temperatures.
Storage
During the winter period, airing the duvet for a short time helps maintain it in good condition. When not in use, store in a dry place inside its original bag. Make sure the duvet is completely dry and not damp.
What is the difference between natural and synthetic duvets?
Why choose a goose down duvet over a synthetic one? The answer lies in its ‘naturalness’, as goose down originally serves as a ‘thermal shield’. Once on your bed at home, it also has a hygroscopic function: it absorbs night-time moisture and allows it to evaporate during the day.
While we sleep, the duvet maintains a constant temperature inside the bed and works to keep us warm without making us sweat.
We also produce finished garments, carefully following the requests and needs of our customers.
In Buggiano, thanks to our feather and down selection, our washing and sterilisation facilities, and our time-honed methodology developed, we can provide countless variations in the quality and type of down: from high-quality filling for luxury garments to customised, made-to-measure items that meet specific comfort and quality requirements.
